“He Must be Teething”
by Julie
He drools all over the place, he sucks on everything, he’s fussy, he must be teething…or maybe, he’s just a baby.
At five months old, I started using this excuse: “He’s teething, that’s why he’s whiny; he’s teething, that’s why he won’t stop crying; he’s teething, that’s why he won’t sleep; he’s teething, that’s why he’s not hungry”. Two months later, not a single tooth, not even a speck of white. My mommy friends and I laugh about this because we are all guilty of using this excuse to explain our child’s behavior.
WebMd, my trusted website for all things baby, says look for these symptoms:
1) Fussier than usual
2) Bites on fingers and toys
3) Refuses to eat or drink
4) Drools
It’s funny, because Will does all of these things…
What has been your experience with teething? Were there any tell-tale signs that a tooth was about to emerge?
I think I’m teething I have the same symptoms
haha… I can TOTALLY relate. I started using this excuse at about 3 1/2 months, convinced that Maximilian was an early teether 😉 His first tooth, bottom front, popped out at about 5 1/2 months and guess what – I didn’t even notice! I was at a wedding and the family taking care of him told me!! Pretty sure it had just cut that day, but still… no fever, no extra fussiness, no drooling, beyond the normal.
That’s hilarious! I’ve stopped checking, because I figure it will be awhile.
How timely…Nick and I were just using that excuse this morning. Our normally perfect angel has been a little fussier than usual so he must be teething even though we can’t feel a thing. Couldn’t just be because he is a baby and that’s what babies do!
Exactly! You know how moms are, we need an explanation for everything.
I, too, thought he was going to be an early teether and started saying that around 4 months. He didn’t get 1st tooth until he was a year old. Until you can see the little white cap starting to poke through, they probably aren’t really teething.
Good to know!
Love this! Just last week I told a friend that I thought Tuck’s 2-year-molars were coming in as a way to explain why he was throwing trucks across the room, all-the-while screaming, “I NEED MILK.” Now that I think about it, maybe Jack has teeth coming in, too!
haha! It really is the best excuse at any age.
This might be one of my biggest pet peeves since Sadie was born. Every time anyone sees her drool, bite her hands, cry or chew on a toy they say “oh, she’s teething.” I used to believe them….but honestly it’s been happening since she was born!
Jason definitely still drools
omg I used to use this excuse all the time, and Lucia is 9 months now and still no teeth haha… I’ve given up looking, who knows when they will come through. I remember my girlfriend came over when her little man was about 5 months and he was fussy and she used the ole teething excuse and his just cut recently and he’s 1 year 😉
